Phil had been acting weird all fucking morning, and because of it, the rest of us decided to leave him alone. I wasn’t sure what it meant, but I thought I was picking up on his vibe or something because I felt the need to be alone myself. Shit just felt off for some reason.

It wasn’t anything to do with the fact that I was in a three-way relationship with Alys and X. That was going all right, I supposed. It wasn’t what I wanted, but…it was better than nothing.

At least, that was what I kept telling myself.

“Damn, man,” said Flipper, just walking into my office like he owned the joint. “You’ve worked some sort of magic on X. He got that solo down in no time at all.”

“Well, we practice a lot, so…”

He dropped his ass onto my futon. “It’s more than that. Like you’ve unlocked some part of his brain. He’s gettin’ this shit way faster than he used to. You’re good for him.”

I smiled. “I try.”

“Well, keep doin’ whatever it is you’re doin’. He’s in the jam area. Wanna join us? We could use some guitar to bring it all together.”

I put down my bass and stood up. “Sure, man.”

He watched me put my instrument on its stand and pick up my guitar. “You don’t mind playin’ guitar, do you? We all know you love the bass.”

“Not at all,” I replied. “I’m just happy I’m making music for a living. I still get to play the bass when I want to.”

It was true. This was what I’d always dreamed of. I wasn’t going to bitch about the fact I wasn’t playing my favorite instrument. I still got to write music and play it with the guys who had first made me want to get my ass up onstage. I didn’t care that it was the rhythm guitars. I could do it all if they needed me to.

Just as we got to the jam area, a strange tremor shook beneath our feet.

X, who was sitting on a stool, his bass across his lap, looked up at us. “The fuck was that?”

A swift frisson of panic engulfed me. Something is wrong. Seriously, seriously wrong.

As fast as I could, I raced toward Phil’s office, skidding to a stop in front of his open door, Flipper and X right behind me.

“What the fuck was that?” X demanded again.

Phil looked nearly as white as me, which was not a good sign. He leaped to his feet as Jason hopped off his desk, and they raced out of his office ahead of us.

“Fuck!” Phil screamed.

Nearly all at once, we tore out of the building and into the parking lot. The atmosphere felt thick with vibrations. Everything felt fucking out of whack. For blocks, car alarms were going off, and up in the distance…

My heart shuddered. Kenna…

From where we stood, the trail of smoke floating into the air didn’t look too significant.

Like a man screaming to be let out of hell, Phil roared, “FUCK!”

BOOM!

An explosion tore through the air, throwing us on our asses, while a black plume shot into the sky.
